This river has been a tourist attraction for thousands of years, with local American Indians visiting it before colonization. Major attractions are the hundreds of different local fish and wildlife, breathtaking waterfalls, and beautiful hiking trails. This beach is a twenty minute drive from our hotel.Crystal River Archaeological State Park A National Historic Landmark, this 61-acre, pre-Columbian, Native American site has burial mounds, temple/platform mounds, a plaza area and a substantial midden. The six-mound complex is one of the longest continuously occupied sites in Florida. For 1,600 years the site served as an imposing ceremonial center for Native Americans. People traveled to the complex from great distances to bury their dead and conduct trade. It is estimated that as many as 7,500 Native Americans may have visited the complex every year. Although primarily an archaeological site, the park sits on the edge of an expansive coastal marsh. Visitors may tour the ground or catch saltwater and freshwater fish. As part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, the park also offers bird-watchers the chance to observe a variety of birds. This park is a nine minute drive from our hotel.Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park The park features a variety of captive animals such as alligators, black bears, red wolf, key deer, flamingoes, whooping cranes and the oldest hippopotamus in captivity. The native wildlife that reside in the park serve as ambassadors for their species, providing visitors face-to-face connections between the diverse Florida habitats and the animals that call those habitats home. Each with a unique life story, all of the animal inhabitants are here for the same reason: they are unable to survive in the wild on their own. Daily programs educate visitors about the various species and what can be done to protect Florida's valuable natural resources. A unique underwater structure, the Underwater Observatory, allows visitors to “walk underwater” beneath the spring’s surface and watch the various fish and manatees swim about. This park is a thirteen minute drive from our hotel.Crystal River Preserve State Park One of Florida's most productive and biologically diverse estuaries, created by the mixing of freshwater from stunning spring-fed rivers with the salt water of the Gulf of Mexico, Crystal River Preserve is a true mosaic. Within its borders are more than 27,500 acres of scrub, pinewoods, hardwood forests, salt marshes and mangrove islands. Much of the property is still untouched, allowing visitors a glimpse at what this area of Florida looked like centuries ago. It’s a year-round destination for hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, and birdwatching. The Preserve’s wetlands play an important role in refreshing Florida’s aquifer, making the area essential for the animals and people that live in and visit these productive and diverse estuaries. This park also offers seasonal eco-heritage boat tours from September to May. This park includes a seven-mile loop hiking trail and is only an eleven mile drive from our hotel.Churchhouse Hammock Boardwalk Trail This lovely trail is around two miles long and leads you into the estuary as well as offering an interesting mix of trees including live oak, magnolia, palms, and other hardwoods. Florida wildlife includes alligators, turtles, armadillos, and multiple bird species. This trail is a four minute drive from our hotel.
